Visitor management for estates

Access & Identity Management Handbook 2020 Residential Estate (Industry), Access Control & Identity Management

Powell Tronics’ visitor management solutions have been adopted at a number of security estates throughout the country.

Residential estates and business parks around South Africa have installed access control systems that aim to streamline access for both pedestrians and vehicular traffic into and out of the respective facility. However, without the addition of a suitable visitor management system that accurately records and monitors visitors, one is missing a vital link in the chain of a reliable access control solution.

This is according to Matthew Bushell, operations manager of Powell Tronics, who says the company’s PT-GUEST and PT-Scan visitor management solutions have been successfully adopted at a number of security estates throughout the country.

PT-GUEST is directly integrated to Impro’s IXP400 ImproNet and the Access Portal range of access control systems. This visitor management solution includes a portable and integrated handheld barcode scanner that scans an individual’s driver’s licence and car registration. All data is downloaded via Wi-Fi directly to an encrypted database on site, thereby eliminating transactional running fees that are often incurred with cloud-based systems.

Moreover, Powell Tronic’s new scanners, which possess a large screen with built-in barcode scanner, have a similar look and feel to a mobile phone. The unit is extremely versatile and user-friendly, offering one-time PINs (OTP) or extended stay capabilities. Communicating via Wi-Fi, the device and the PT-GUEST solution allow for the ultimate in visitor management portability and usability.

PT-GUEST allows estate managers to accurately identify exactly who is on site at a specific time and results in controlled traffic flow at the perimeter. “In addition, the system provides a comprehensive browser-based reporting suite for site administration, including a ‘contractors still on site’ report. The site can also tap into valuable marketing information when considering the rich statistical data available.

“This is especially pertinent where the estate is not only reserved for the use of residents, but may play host to wine-tasting, golf days and other events. The reports provided will indicate busy periods and specific zones or hotspots (for example, the golf course or the conference venue or spa) which are being visited and how many people are visiting those particular areas over a specific time period.”

Updated mobile app

The PT-GUEST program is now available on both Google Play Store and the Apple Store. Bushell says the updated mobile app available with PT-GUEST allows for much faster and easier pre-registration of visitors by a registered user and eliminates costly SMS services often incurred by the estate or entity. This can also be done by means of the Web interface.

The design criteria on this latest releases were attention to detail, simplicity of operation for the users and the security of all data by encryption, thus ensuring security.

“We are working towards making visitor management readily available, no matter what the application, especially when one needs to verify and monitor visitor access and movement on an estate or even within a business park. We are passionate about customisation of solutions and this remains one of our key focus points,” says Bushell.
