Is security a DIY project?

Residential Estate Security Handbook 2016 - Vol 2 Integrated Solutions, Security Services & Risk Management, Residential Estate (Industry)

Home robberies are on the increase according to new statistics released by the South African Police Service. With this reality in mind the security complex or road closure areas are becoming a more attractive option to live in. All of us want to keep our families and business assets safe, the idea of a fenced off area with a guard on duty gives peace of mind. With that comes the concept of on-site security and even alarm monitoring.

The central dilemma is the question: To handle your own security with a low cost on-site guard and even a control room, or to outsource this task to a third party. Each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages.

On site

On-site security is immediate and in close proximity to the area. Response can be quick, the area is familiar and relationships can be nurtured between security staff and the clients. On-site, in-house security services can make more financial sense.

The disadvantages of a purely on-site security operation are endless. The employment laws covering the security sector are extensive. All security guards have to be registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PRISA). Statutory requirements are numerous and the insight into the regulatory requirements of the security sector is paramount. Most body corporate and trustees will be ill equipped to manage this.

Off site

The advantages of off-site security includes: Staff will be well trained, vetted and equipped for the job at hand when provided by a reputable security service provider. This significantly improves security standards by giving correct advice when needed, quick backup and response when additional assistance is required, together with knowledgeable technical support on request. This could lead to cost savings as the client pays for a small portion of the operational costs with the knowledge of getting the correct information and service, with all statutory requirements being met.

In conclusion a mixture of on-site and off-site makes the most sense, by partnering with a company that has a successful track record of establishing, building, installing and staffing a solution for the security complex or enclosed area. Both types of monitoring should be pro-active and designed to prevent losses or injury occurring. In the times we live in, it is of utmost importance that each of us takes responsibility for the safety of ourselves and our loved ones. Security is not something that you should leave in the hands of others, be informed, be alert and be involved.
