Training in the intruder alarm industry

The importance of training can never be over-emphasised in an industry where there is a constant shortage of skilled staff. The South African Intruder Detection Services Association (SAIDSA) has been offering technical skills programmes for alarm technicians for the past 10 years and has certified over 1000 technicians.

The association currently offers a five-day Certified Technician course which consists of the following nine modules:

• Worksite safety.

• Detector theory.

• Wiring techniques.

• Installation techniques.

• False alarm management.

• Radio & antenna installations.

• Basic security electronics.

• Programming principles.

• Fault-finding.

Certified Technician courses are conducted every month in their training centre in Benoni and in all major centres during the year. One-day Technical Sales courses are held every second month.

As an association, SAIDSA is committed to the lifting of standards of installations in the industry and utilise these courses to uplift current skills as well as teach new skills. The course is suitable for everyone from a layman to an engineer.

It is not necessary to be a SAIDSA member in order to do the training as SAIDSA believes that training should be available for everyone.

All training is generic with the emphasis on the technology rather than the product, allowing technicians to understand exactly how things work rather than only knowing how to install the product. This approach has proven to be a successful model, empowering technicians with solid principles.

All training also incorporates all the SAIDSA installation standards which are blended into the training.

Reports coming back to SAIDSA from companies who have had their technicians trained are always positive, with companies reporting a substantial reduction in false alarms and technical call-outs as well as a higher quality of installations.

The facilitator of all the SAIDSA training courses is Bryan Rudolph who has 36 years’ experience in the intruder alarm industry.
