FleetVu - the vehicle monitoring solution

November 2001 Asset Management

FleetVu is the vehicle monitoring solution in a small black box. One can watch assets on the move by either receiving regular 'lat: long' position detail via GSM or view exactly what is happening to a vehicle and the load, in realtime.

A choice of cameras are mounted in strategic positions both inside the cab and trailer, plus outside the vehicle. Contact alarms are strategically placed so that recording of events takes place the moment there is an activation of alarm contact, ie trailer doors are opened. Alternatively trailer doors can be set to only allow activation from the control room upon arrival at the destination. One also has the choice to set recordings to take place every time there is motion in the view of the camera positions, or FleetVu can record the entire journey. Easy to use, FleetVu allows one to set it so that it calls on any phone or cell when there is an incident triggering the recording mode.

On the vehicle's return to depot, one can remove the hard-drive or transfer data via wireless LAN, with up to a week's recordings of the vehicle's events, and simply insert a replacement hard-drive or download and delete the data in the FleetVu box. This enables the vehicle to get on with its next delivery while the information for any unusual incidents is reviewed. The simplicity of the system allows all the recorded material to be reviewed in minutes, as each recording is logged with date and time.

One is then able view the events as they happen with a direct confirmation against the mapping information because FleetVu can record events at rates up to 25 frames per second and link these, through data fields, directly to the key point information.

Specifications:

* Rugged powder-coated black box: large box - 40 x 27 x 10 cm, small box - 27 x 26 x 8,5 cm.

FleetVu's black box measures 27 x 26 x 8,5 cm with the ability to connect either 4 or 8 cameras. The system runs at 12, 24 or 220 V, and has a Power Management Unit (PMU), which controls the voltages necessary for the correct powering of the unit. The PMU incorporates intelligent software allowing controlled UPS type shutdown when a battery's output drops beneath a certain level, likewise it prevents against draining a vehicle's main battery to the point where one can no longer start the engine. An external back-up battery allows continued recording when the engine is switched off.

Running NTFS file partitions on the stable NT platform, FleetVu records information at any rate up to 25 fps - realtime, and produces an average frame size from 1-10 KB. A full days recording will be less than 10 GB of hard-drive space. Information can then be downloaded at the end of the day via wireless LAN or Bluetooth technology to allow quick and secure data storage for further inspection or rotational storage in case an incident needs to be reviewed.

Vision Catcher presently incorporates a series of new developments as additional options for FleetVu, including GPS and GSM support with the new ASTrack range. With current GPS accuracy, FleetVu is able to track the vehicle while it is on route, providing packaged information capable of being translated on to mapping software. Once FleetVu is downloaded the relevant video files can then be attached to the plots giving full data information and a playback of the relevant realtime recording.

"FleetVu at the touch of a button shows you where your truck is, that your stock is safe, and most importantly that your vehicle is still part of your fleet," adds Vision Catcher's Niall Beazley.
