Integrated estate access

Access & Identity Management Handbook 2014 Access Control & Identity Management

The Amber Valley and Amber Ridge estates are part of a residential retirement development in Howick. The trustees were looking for an automated solution to manage secure access into the estates and control the high volume of residents, visitors, contractors and staff admissions, but without negatively impacting the daily operations of the estate or the lifestyle of the residents.

The Amber Valley and Amber Ridge Retirement Villages are situated on the boundary of Howick, overlooking the surrounding countryside, yet close to Howick’s amenities. It has been designed as an open spaced village with all the facilities, security and care one may require in later years of retirement, thus making it a very desirable development. There are plans for additional add-ons to the estate, so the access system installed had to be flexible enough to accommodate the future expansion.

Impro Technologies optimised an automated access control solution for all entering and exiting through the six entrances of the two estates. The Impro Technologies IXP400i system was put in place to handle the integration and the large number of transactions that would take place, with the ability for full spectrum customised reporting.

Building on the backbone of the IXP400i system, vehicle and driver identification products from Nedap AVI were integrated into the system, which enabled automatic monitoring of vehicles and drivers. An additional requirement was an interlocking solution to stop tailgating vehicles. A loop was installed that would trigger the boom to open, once the vehicle had passed, a sensor would then drive the relay to close the boom. Only then would the reader activate and pick up the windshield tag to allow the vehicle to enter/exit the site, assisting in restricting unauthorised access. Third-party equipment was installed on site, these included biometrics to manage the domestic workers admission into the estate and CCTV ensuring that all access control activity could be linked to visuals.

In addition to the improved security, the system enables easy authentication of residents and their vehicles, visitor management and 24-hour security monitoring; offering the residents the peace of mind that only those who are meant to gain access to their estates do.
