Cameras - useful lifecycle of 8 years
When we look at the expected longevity of cameras and that they could make up roughly 30% to 50% of the cost of the system, this purchasing decision needs to be considered carefully. The biggest question is how open is the camera, does it comply with ONVIF standards, H.264 and HDTV. Edge storage and edge applications are gaining popularity, will your camera be able to accommodate these trends?
Normally if a camera makes it through the first 18 months, it will go on for some time. The main cause of IP camera failure is normally power related. To protect this investment emphasis should be placed on an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) on the network power over Ethernet (POE) switches. Camera sensors also degrade over time, especially when exposed to direct sunlight and maintaining focus is an issue that can reduce a cameras useful lifecycle.
