Xpanding access control

Access & Identity Management Handbook 2013 Access Control & Identity Management, Industrial (Industry)

Xpanda is a manufacturer of trellis doors, burglar guards, roller shutter doors and other barrier security products. The existing access/time and attendance system (T&A) comprised old mechanical locks, which were used to calculate the times at which employees arrived at work.

In addition to reviewing the T&A aspect of the facilities, Xpanda had various access points that also required biometric access control to facilitate better management of their employees.

The product proposed by Impro Technologies was the IXP400 access control system. This was deemed best fit because of its powerful software, strict access control parameters and zone routing.

From a T&A perspective, Xpanda required a system that would seamlessly and efficiently replace the old existing mechanical clocking system and that could be used in conjunction with Payroll software.

Xpanda also required the system to be set up to compel the employees to follow a pre-defined path in order for them to enter and exit the site. Biometric readers were installed at several access points for strict access control as well as at the clocking stations where they were used together with the Time Manager software.

On entering the site, employees have to report to the ablution blocks before being permitted entry to their workstations. Similarly, when they finish working for the day, they have to clock out of their workstations before proceeding to the ablution area. Thereafter, they are able to leave the premises. This practice of zone routing ensures that the employees follow a logical route, thereby preventing them from accessing unauthorised sections of the site.

The requirements were for 10 access points, comprising seven clocking points for T&A purposes; and one each for men, women and a main turnstile. Approximately 400 tagholders are registered on the system.

The system includes third-party software and devices; Morpho MA100 biometrics reader for the secure clocking at the T&A points and access control points, and Time Manager software, which was integrated back into the IXP400 to provide more accurate times for payroll purposes.

In addition to streamlining access control and increasing the reliability of T&A data, the new system has eliminated the infamous method of buddy clocking.
