Two systems to enhance the efficacy of intrusion detection

SMART Alarm, Intrusion & Perimeter Detection Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

The OPTEX RedScan Pro and RedScan mini-Pro sensors and the company’s proprietary Fibre SenSys solution are making waves in the security industry. Both are highly accurate intrusion detection systems that employ two very different yet powerful technologies, providing two types of intrusion detection solutions.

As an industry leader in the manufacturing of sensors and detection, OPTEX has invested over 45 years of research and development into its products and technologies. This translates into its ability to meet its mission of helping customers face their individual intrusion detection challenges.

This dedication to R&D; means that they are not only a global leader in intrusion detection technology, but also set industry standards with products and technologies such as LiDAR and fibre optic perimeter solutions.

“But let us start at the beginning,” says Regal’s Head of Product Management, Michael Collier, “and look at the history of the two technologies and how OPTEX is using them to change the landscape for intrusion detection.”

It is LiDAR for the win

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) was created to map and measure distances and surfaces. Using laser light, the distances over a certain terrain can be more accurately measured, especially over uneven surfaces. Perfect for mapping the earth’s surface for urban planning, forestry, and environmental monitoring, LiDAR has also been used by the military, meteorology, archaeology, environmental monitoring, and, lately, autonomous vehicles.

“But for security purposes, especially when it comes to high-risk areas or easily accessible infrastructure – national key points, power stations, financial institutions, museums – LiDAR technology is a perfect fit,” explains Collier.

“The OPTEX solution, RedScan Pro and RedScan mini-Pro constantly map the area needing protection, on either the horizontal or vertical plane. A marked difference between this sensor and others is that it does more than identify a threat. With advanced onboard analytics, the RedScan device determines the size and distance of a moving object and differentiates between people, animals, vehicles, drones and more.”

“The devices have been used in high-risk perimeter applications and can be programmed to trigger notifications for the right type of intruder, minimising false alarms, but ensuring the right detection takes place for the task at hand.”

In addition to their exact detection technology, the RedScan units are not hindered by rain, light or shadow – they are always on guard, especially when powered by PoE or PoE+ and integrated into your surveillance VMS platforms. Another helpful feature is the unit’s ability to define up to eight detection zones, with independently configurable parameters and multiple sensitivity scenarios – one zone can be set to detect people, another to detect vehicles, and yet another to do both. This level of sensitivity also reduces nuisance alarms, improving monitoring and response stats within control rooms.

Here are five key reasons to choose the OPTEX RedScan solution for your next big project:

1. Comes with a proprietary software manager and web-based browser.

2. Consists of indoor and outdoor units.

3. Can be programmed for directional alerts.

4. Triggers can be added to show tampering and detect anti-masking, anti-rotation and lens soiling.

5. Analytics includes event logs with pre- and post-alarm recordings.

Protect large scale properties

Fibre optic sensors are another detection technology that is becoming a prominent layer of security. This technology can be quickly deployed across large areas where kilometres of space need to be protected.

“In short, fibre optic cables are used as sensors along a piece of infrastructure such as a fence, cable or pipe,” explains Collier. “Fibre optic sensors work by transmitting light through the glass core of a cable.” A disturbance to the cable employing seismic disruption affects how the light is transmitted, and the intrusion system interprets this signal as an alarm.

“Using sophisticated software and algorithms to eliminate false alarms, security teams can be alerted to the disturbance based on custom-user rules and the system’s automated protocols.”

More than just perimeter detection, fibre optic technology offers additional benefits such as:

High sensitivity detects minute disturbances along the entire length of the cable.

Immune to electromagnetic interference, making them highly reliable in various environments.

Always on peace of mind as electrical power is not required along the sensing cable. This also means reduced risk in explosive or hazardous environments.

Scalability covers long distances, making it suitable for perimeter security, pipelines, and other extensive areas.

Low maintenance, requiring minimal maintenance once installed.

Why choose OPTEX LiDAR and Fibre SenSys?

The Regal Projects team is well-versed in all the benefits of the OPTEX LiDAR and Fibre SenSys offerings. Still, the solutions’ versatility and adaptability translate into applications in various environments and scenarios.

LiDAR systems can be used in open areas, urban settings, and even through dense foliage, making them suitable for perimeter security and surveillance integrations. Fibre optic systems are ideal for protecting fences, walls, buried cables and pipelines, providing covert security that is hard to bypass. This adaptability allows for tailored security solutions that meet specific needs with a layered approach to risk management.

Both systems are low-maintenance options and highly adaptable to scenarios, weather conditions, and environments. They are among the best solutions currently available for critical infrastructure and large projects.
