Hadeda-proof sensor technologies

SMART Alarm, Intrusion & Perimeter Detection Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection

Several companies offer solutions incorporating the latest detection and alerting technologies in the alarms and intrusion detection market. SMART Security Solutions asked a few of these companies represented in South and southern Africa for some insight into their products and solutions.

In this article, we look at Takex, represented locally by Reditron. Gordon Moore, Reditron’s National Sales Director, and Mark Crichton, Takex Channel Manager for South Africa, answered our enquiries.

Takex was established in Kyoto, Japan in 1959 and produced its first infrared security detector in 1965, ‘inventing’ the point-to-point beam. In the early ’70s, the company created some of the first commercially available passive infrared detectors (PIDs). Its focus initially was primarily on the domestic market, then growing overseas interest was recognised and supported by the opening of Takex America in 1984 and Takex Europe in 1989. The primary focus of Takex over the last 30 years has been to expand and enhance the quality and reliability of external/perimeter protection at all levels, including domestic, industrial, and government/military.

Local market focus

Although Takex has been selling products in South Africa for over 40 years, its real success hit its stride in the region in the last 20 years. Takex first introduced one device locally that coped well with the changeable environment and also the unique challenges of indigenous wildlife (specifically Hadedas).

By developing a product that provided dependability and reliability at a price that made it available for all, the value of the Takex detector was quickly recognised and adopted by all market sectors, leading to further additions to the product family. Takex products proved to be a reliable and, hence, popular range of detectors for over two decades, with over one million outdoor units installed.

These devices are designed to protect large areas by detecting intruders before they attempt to enter a property. Takex offers various types of detectors tailored for specific applications, such as safeguarding solar installations, airports, mines, prisons, residential and commercial environments, and more.

Because of the wide variety of commercially available security system components, Takex ensures its devices are universally compatible with global and domestic manufacturers. They are recognised and recommended by industry peers who manufacture alarm panels, camera systems, etc., and are used extensively as triggers to activate CCTV.

Options suited to the environment

There are two main categories of detectors: PIRs and point-to-point beams. Takex offers a range of product options, including hard-wired and battery-powered solutions or alternatives. The battery-powered units are designed to be compatible with all wireless transmitters, meaning they can be integrated into any wireless system. The latest generation of PIRs has considered specific issues in SA, such as power issues and lightning, sporting enhanced surge protection and lower voltage requirements (for when the power dies and the battery backup is employed).

Of course, while everyone enjoys the benefits of the latest technologies and innovations, performance and service quality are always critical in purchasing decisions. Obtaining local support and product assistance is an essential aspect of this.

Takex products enjoy “robust support throughout South Africa”. An extensive network via Reditron’s national branches and approved sub-distributors ensures comprehensive coverage. This footprint encompasses over 30 sales outlets, all equipped with technical resources to provide first-line support and uphold the five-year warranty offered on all Takex products. Additionally, partners and customers are offered training on demand across all regions, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to maximise their Takex products.

Takex products are available at all Reditron branches.
