Regal fusses over Fluss

Issue 8 2023 IoT & Automation, Smart Home Automation

Along with so many other industries, security technology has improved in leaps and bounds, even more so with the advancements in IoT and the 4th Industrial Revolution. However, technology does not always have to be complex, as proven by the team at Fluss, a South African company and one of Regal Security’s most recent partners.

When the team from Fluss brought their Bluetooth-enabled device to Regal’s research team, they were hooked. Effortless in its simplicity, the Fluss device means no more losing remotes, endless waiting at the gate for visitors, constant scanning of fingerprints, etc. Once installed into the motor (door, boom, gate or even garage), users can simply use their Bluetooth-enabled phone to operate the system.

The device’s very simplicity is what sets it apart – there is no need for a bank of PCs, servers, endless cabling or specialist equipment. All you need is a smartphone for commissioning and use. Fluss is completely scalable, from installation into a primary residence to being deployed into a business park or commercial facility, although if installed in a bigger environment, it would be advisable to use the web interface.

Fluss can be integrated with existing systems or installed as a separate solution on its own. The software fully complies with PoPIA and GDPR and is secured using the latest encryption standards.

Says Michael Collier, Regal’s Head of Product Management. “It’ is amazing to think that this little device, which measures less than 5 cm on either side, is capable of so much and comes from some humble beginnings.

“Fluss is the brainchild of Thomas Davies, Founder and CEO of the company, and Ockie Van Zyl, the Head of Business Strategy Design. On their website, Van Zyl will tell you about their journey from an IoT start-up to the team they are today. He will tell you how he struggled to sell the product at the early stages of Fluss. In his words, there was ‘no packaging, no formal sales script, no online training, wrong pricing, wrong initial business strategy, bugs and much more’.

On the Fluss website, Van Zyl adds that “being part of a startup seems to give your work a new meaning; the sense of ownership seems more real, and the pursuit of excellence seems to have more of a direct impact.”

Regal knows and understands this well. Connecting with homegrown brands such as Fluss means that, in addition to helping a South African company succeed, we are providing South Africans with local products and putting money back into our own economy, and that is a major benefit for us.
