Secure your site during outages

Issue 6 2023 Access Control & Identity Management

The energy crisis has been an ongoing concern for many businesses and households in South Africa. When many locks are powered and maintained by mains, the question is, how do you ensure your building is secured during loadshedding? Paxton’s battery-run, energy-efficient door handle, PaxLock Pro, is an ideal door lock solution when power supply is limited.

Werner Geldenhuys, Paxton’s Regional Sales Manager in South Africa, says, “The PaxLock Pro range is our collection of wireless, battery powered smart door handles. They are efficiently designed to consume minimal energy to operate, and the batteries generally last around two years.”

According to EskomSePush and The Outlier’s load shedding calendar, up to July this year there were approximately 211 days with load shedding, which already surpassed the total of 205 days in 2022.

Geldenhuys explains the energy-friendly design of the door handle. “PaxLock Pro will enter a sleep mode when not in use, requiring minimal energy. When a person presents their token to the door, built-in capacitive sensors will wake the unit. This minimises energy consumption, allowing longer battery life.”

PaxLock Pro is designed to be compatible with any DIN standard lock for a quick and simple installation. It works stand alone or with Paxton’s access control systems Net2 and Paxton10, meaning it can be used in a broad range of applications and is future-proof as a site’s requirements change and grow.

He further explains how PaxLock Pro operates when the power supply is unstable. “The door handle is designed to store access privilege data locally. That means that once an end user is registered, they can gain access to the door even when the mains are out.”

A benefit that PaxLock Pro brings when used with Paxton10 is the license-free smart credentials. “Users can make use of their smartphone or smartwatch for free in place of traditional keys or electronic tokens to gain access to any Paxton10 door. System administrators can issue smart credentials at the touch of a button, making building management even more simple and cost-effective.”
