Robots: a security opportunity or a threat?

Issue 4 2023 Editor's Choice, News & Events, Conferences & Events

Professor Martin Gill, Director of Perpetuity Research & Consultancy International (PRCI) Ltd and the School of Criminal Justice at the University of South Africa (UNISA), will be holding a Global Thought Leadership Security webinar on 22 June 2023 at 16:30 (SAST) to discuss the contentious issue of robots operating in the security industry.

There are well established advantages to using robots in security roles. For example, they can independently perform programmed tasks with minimal human oversight, including conducting routine patrols, and doing so cost effectively and more productively than humans, since they don’t get tired or bored. They also work more safely in hazardous environments.

However, they can lead to job losses, the initial investment can be substantial, and then there are the privacy threats. Research has shown that industrial robots can be hacked to steal trade secrets, damage equipment, cause bodily harm and corrupt processes. So where does this leave us?

The webinar panel, chaired by Prof Martin Gill, will discuss the issues above as well as other topics such as:

• What is the potential for using robots in security work?

• How can the downsides be best managed?

• Are robots a threat to humans?

The panel will be made up of:

• Dr Craig Donald - Director of Advanced Development Applications, and of Leaderware

• Prof Shandré Kim Jansen van Rensburg – Lecturer, University of South Africa.

• Andrew Seldon – Editor of Smart Security Solutions.

Attendance is free of charge. Simply register here and you will receive a confirmation email.

UNISA is also sponsoring the Securex Theatre Seminar Programme from 6 – 8 June 2023 at Gallagher Convention centre, Midrand, Johannesburg. Find out more at www.securitysa.com/*unisa1
