Centralised VMS for multiple sites

SMART Mining Security Solutions 2023 Mining (Industry), Surveillance

STT is a subsidiary of the Sebri Group, and its core activities include the mining and the production of specialised industrial sands for the glass industry in North Africa, Asia and Europe. To meet the requirements of the transparent glass sand market, which demands higher standards, the company has invested in the most advanced, durable and long-lasting processing equipment capable of producing 200 tons per hour.

Safeguarding these production assets on site is crucial, as any theft of equipment will lead to downtime and loss of revenue. Additionally, safety of employees is as important, and the company was faced with incidents where staff were not adhering to the SHEQ requirements in certain areas.

Its existing system was very disconnected, with each site running separately with little to no camera management ability, and no reporting on health status. When footage was reviewed, it either was of bad quality or did not exist. There was also limited analytics available on the edge devices, which naturally provided little to no value to the business.

The systems were not user friendly and required operators and technicians to be trained on multiple VMS platforms, which did not speak to each other. During investigations, this made it difficult to tie up the systems and the video collected across them.

The STT requirements

STT wanted an all-encompassing solution, which could have its various domains all visible on a single interface; displayed on a video wall along with interactive maps, to allow staff to see camera locations should an alarm be triggered. STT also wanted a single platform to be able to distribute analytics and manage storage across all the cameras, regardless of make or model. It also required additional functionality that would monitor and manage the health status of its security devices.

This meant the company needed a single VMS platform that was brand agnostic, easy to use and offered a complete distribution of services (analytics and camera management) across all sites seamlessly and allowed access via a single client. A tender document was drawn up with a scope of work and the design of the existing infrastructure. The primary goal was to move away from multiple independent systems to a single unified VMS solution.

AxxonSoft chosen as the central management platform

AxxonSoft was selected to secure access to mining operations, but also to perform very specific counting at weighbridges and, finally, to monitor traffic areas for the safety of personnel working in the mines. The outcome of the solution was to work towards improving the security of the mine, gaining better data of operations, as well as safeguarding and preventing incidents on the site, specifically with respect to employees.

To date, 225 Dahua cameras on three servers have been installed and managed by the Axxon One VMS, supported by a central video wall management console, with distributed access rights and audit trails. It can also be used to distribute analytic services, which can be added to any camera regardless of brand.

A series of tests and trials were done to ensure that the solution would be stable and met the client’s requirements. Several presentations and demonstrations using existing footage were required to show the results obtainable using existing, offline data.

The system integrator was involved in the specification, preparation, implementation and maintenance of the solution. In addition, AxxonSoft engineers were also onsite and were considered critical to the success of the project. This was necessary for the more difficult requirements, such as setting up and maintaining analytics and health monitoring in different environments, specifically below ground and in critical infrastructure areas.

The result was a successful implementation in which all the deliverables STT required were achieved.
