Heightening physical security at military base

Issue 1 2023 Access Control & Identity Management, Government and Parastatal (Industry), Products & Solutions

Military bases are, by their very nature, highly sensitive to the need for physical security. Turnstar Systems recently installed two 3-metre Velocity Raptor traffic spikes at the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Randfontein military base on Gauteng’s West Rand.

Turnstar CEO, Craig Sacks says, “Together with the personnel at the base, we elected to install a recessed version of our Velocity Raptor spikes. These spikes are designed to prevent vehicles from entering or leaving through an access point without intervention from an authorised operator. When a vehicle passes over the spikes in the raised position, it will result in a punctured tyre. However, when they are in the lowered position, the vehicle passes over the recessed spikes completely unhindered.”

The Velocity Raptor provides secure vehicle access, together with a visual deterrent to criminals. The SwiftDrive technology smoothly operates the barrier arm, and enables the raising and lowering of the spikes. A red and green optic LED light strip is integrated into the barrier arm to ensure maximum visibility, safety, and aesthetics.

Designed for high-speed operation with low power consumption, the Velocity Raptor is characterised by its ability to maintain 100% duty cycle operability over many years, irrespective of the number of daily operations undertaken. “In the event of load shedding, the Velocity will continue working, as it has a built-in 7 Ah battery system, and can also be operated with solar power. There is also an effortless manual override, which allows the barrier arm to be released and the spike to be lowered, for traffic to pass through in the event of catastrophic failure,” says Sacks.
