Access to copper mine

Issue 2 2022 Access Control & Identity Management

The Kamoa-Kakula mine, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has started producing copper. The phased expansion puts Kamoa-Kakula on the path to establish itself as the second largest copper mining operation in the world.

Since 2019, Flow Systems has assisted Kamoa Copper with various security and access control solutions. Given the value of the mining operation, it was essential that the mine have various safety measures in place. Flow Systems Manufacturers, established in 1975, was able to supply Kamoa-Kakula with quality access control equipment building on the team’s expertise for designing and manufacturing machinery.

Flow System’s Automatic Vehicle Access Control Barriers placed throughout the various sites on the mine offered the desired level of security required. Managing the flow of vehicles in and out of the site is a necessity as this is a high-risk site. Monitoring the first point of access before vehicles are allowed onto the site is essential. It is important to stop any suspicious people coming onto site starting from there.

One of the next points of access offers Flow System’s Heavy Duty Full Height Industrial Single or Double Turnstiles. The full height industrial turnstiles are designed for maximum impenetrability to automatically guide personnel in and out of secure areas. These turnstiles, specified for mines among other sites, offer the desired security and reliability to the mine.

The Alcolizer Breathalysers supplied with these turnstiles are perfect to monitor staff or any visitor entering the site. It is crucial that blood alcohol levels are monitored to prevent accidents on site. Blood alcohol levels exceeding the limit can cause serious harm to the individual as well as other staff or visitors. Given the current situation with the pandemic, the Alcolizer’s unique sample collector eliminates blow-back and residue from positive blows which are expelled from the side outlets.

Waist high single stainless steel turnstiles are designed for use indoors and have aesthetic appeal as well. This gives the promise of safety and security while also providing a more open feel to visitors.
