Providing safe and smart solutions

Issue 8 2021 Government and Parastatal (Industry)

There are various definitions to describe the term ‘safe/smart city’, however, most commonly it is defined as a combination of technologies and solutions covering networks, devices, video cameras and environmental sensors to enhance urban safety, quality of citizens’ lives as well as stimulate economic growth. Most safe/smart city solutions consist of the following key components: command and control, critical communications, surveillance, AI, processes and procedures.

With the use of sensors and various AI data provided by CCTV and intelligent surveillance solutions, many safe/smart city solutions are implemented to increase public safety and efficiencies, hence improving the quality of delivery of essential services to customers. These solutions are designed to improve transportation, accessibility to emergency and social services and create a sustainable intelligence platform by providing feedback and giving the citizens a voice.

Through the use of video content analytics (VCA) citizens’ safety and response to emergency services could be hugely improved by providing control rooms pro-actively with alerts triggered by specific surveillance cameras identifying events or trends as defined using specific rules or scenarios. These events will be sent through to an operation room where they can only be closed using standard operational procedures (SOP) and assist in avoiding all other false positives to ensure rapid and timeous response by emergency services. With the use of an intelligent cloud video recorder (CVR), these VCA capabilities could be enabled for normal IP or analogue cameras, therefore, reducing the cost associated with these intelligent edge devices.
