Tailored access solution

The UNISA Olitzki building is situated in the heart of the Johannesburg CBD’s financial sector at 120 Fox Street. Typically regarded as a sensitive area from a safety perspective, this downtown area of the city required a tailored security solution approach to ensure the wellbeing and safety of employees and visitors to the building.

Turnstar was contracted to provide a comprehensive physical security solution that includes six Speedgate secure lanes, four Velocity traffic booms with a jack-knife feature, 10 fixed traffic bollards, a stainless-steel Titan double turnstile, one Trident single and one double turnstile and a Pulse automatic gate.

Starting at the outside of the property, the fixed steel bollards provide the highest levels of security to high-risk areas. “For this reason, they’re used extensively at embassies, consulates, military areas, airports, railway stations, bus stations, ports, oil and gas refineries, as well as mines. Our fixed security bollards offer an open, aesthetic appearance to the area they secure. Our engineers have ensured that they are reliable and durable too. The fixed bollards are available in diameters of 127, 220, 275 and 355 mm and in heights of 500, 600 and 800 mm,” says Craig Sacks, CEO of Turnstar.

Further security on the perimeter is provided by the Velocity automatic industrial vehicle barriers, equipped with Turnstar’s SwiftDrive technology. The jack-knife feature on these Velocity booms allows the barrier arm to fold in order for it to be raised without connecting with the concrete ceiling above. Thanks to the SwiftDrive technology, the booms are characterised by high-speed operation, ensuring the elimination of bottlenecking of traffic. The intelligent collision detection and mid-cycle auto reverse features ensure complete safety of vehicles and their occupants whilst driving under the barrier arm.

The Titan full-height industrial turnstile is ideal for controlled access of employees into buildings and can integrate with numerous forms of electronic access control and time and attendance systems. The safety of employees is guaranteed through the Anti-Trap safety system which guarantees no mid-rotation locking. This ensures that no person will be trapped during their passage through the turnstile.

The Trident waist-height single and double turnstiles are extremely popular. Their simple, yet attractive design, coupled with their quiet operation, makes them suitable for both prestige and industrial applications. The ultra-heavy-duty Rotalok rotation locking mechanism allows bi-directional operation and complete security.

“The Speedgate Secure is an attractive complement to any building interior, with its sleek brushed stainless-steel cabinets and glass wings. These highly functional access lanes have a super-fast opening and closing time of just 1 second, but at the same time, they are designed for user safety and are programmed to remain open until the person has cleared the wings. In addition, the pedestrian is intelligently monitored during operation in order to prevent tailgating or access in the wrong direction. It provides safe closing only once the pedestrian has crossed the threshold,” says Sacks.

The Pulse automatic gate has an 180° operation to allow trolleys, wheelchairs and baby buggies to pass through unassisted and unhindered. “The 1,8-metre-high glass wings offer a high level of security, but without imposing severe restrictions on employees and visitors. During power failures, the glass wing can be easily turned by hand and in the event of a fire, the alarm detection system will trigger the automatic opening of the gate in the desired direction,” says Sacks. Reliability of the gate is ensured with the incorporation of the brushless DC motor drive with planetary gearbox and the tooth brake that allows for effective locking.
