The cornerstone of frictionless access

1 July 2020 Access Control & Identity Management

With the world in a state of lockdown, the current coronavirus pandemic has had a profound effect on how we approach matters such as hygiene and cleanliness, and has for the foreseeable future placed a question mark on the traditional touch-based biometric fingerprint devices typically used for access control and time and attendance.

As more people start returning to their offices, schools and universities from June 2020, leaving the safety of their homes and in many cases residential complexes, where one can often find these devices, it creates a problem in that many of the security and time tracking measures put in place now need to be circumvented for health and safety’s sake.

Powell Tronics has a solution to this ‘new normal’ challenge by having integrated the IDEMIA MorphoWave Compact device into both Impro Technologies’ legacy IXP400 (Impronet) system and the latest offering, Access Portal, through its PTWave solution. “The same contactless technology has now also been integrated into our in-house standalone access management and time and attendance offerings, ATOM Core and ATOM Charged respectively, which with the existing facility of using MIFARE cards, allows for an easy and cost-effective upgrade path for our existing installation base while maintaining stringent health safeguards,” says Andre Joubert, Powell Tronics’ lead developer for the IDEMIA integration solutions.

Matthew Bushell, operations manager at Powell Tronics, explains that with the IDEMIA MorphoWave Compact, users are positively identified with a simple wave of the hand. The device’s touchless sensor quickly scans four fingers, ensuring accuracy and reliable fingerprint matching for maximum security. The reader’s high-speed, touchless capability allows users to remain in motion while being identified, resulting in quicker access control and time and attendance transactions, thus reducing the overall time taken to access a premises. “What makes this system second to none is the fact that it is not affected by wet or exceptionally dry fingers,” says Bushell.

The deployment and installation of the MorphoWave Compact is seamless and effortless as the device can be powered with POE+ and with its IP65 grading, the compact wall-mount reader ensures that MorphoWave can be deployed at any location. In addition to this, a locally sourced stainless steel enclosure, fondly referred as the T-Rex enclosure, can be supplied by Powell Tronics as an additional protective measure for this elite device.

Powell Tronics is turning its attention to completing its integration of the latest facial recognition device on offer from IDEMIA: VisionPass. This revolutionary facial recognition device solves the common pain points experienced by other solutions by eliminating duplicate transactions when people remain standing in front of the device, as well as erroneous transactions from other people standing nearby. Building on the artificial intelligence success of the MorphoWave Compact, the VisionPass offers an even higher speed and level of accuracy with its three-camera optical set, along with the ease of frictionless in-motion transacting.
