IoT security seal

With the current lockdown and ports operating at reduced capacity, the need for automation has been taken to a new level. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement, crested by the African Union (AU), was signed by 54 of the 55 member States in Kigali, Rwanda on 21 March 2018. This brings together 54 African countries to create the largest free trade area and therefore a massive market.

ISS Africa, headed by Eugene Kayat, specialising in video analytics with in-house modularised add-ons, has announced SecurOS CARGO, an intelligent video analytics module for the SecurOS video management platform, providing recognition of cargo container ISO codes in a variety of applications. It implements advanced native image processing software, the ISS SecurOS framework and advanced algorithms for the recognition of codes on cargo containers.

SecurOS CARGO provides a number of advantages for users, including the ability to recognise codes on cargo containers from numerous sides. By developing a container code recognition solution that integrates with cargo management processes at port, intermodal, and logistics centres, SecurOS CARGO can improve throughput and turnaround time, reduce liability, and be used to better locate and track containers in large facilities. To further the ability to manage the security of a facility, the automated system can also incorporate facial and licence plate recognition, along with tracking capabilities, for a more comprehensive search and report.

IoT seals

The African team, together with partner Mediaverge, has developed added IoT Seals, ensuring increased security and faster turnaround times, culminating in improving all companies’ return on investment (ROI). These seals can be customised and branded for each client’s needs.

The high-security bolt seal provides traditional tamper evidence and authentication, as well as Internet of Things (IOT) capabilities for wireless tracking and alerting services. The smart seal is used to secure ocean containers, rail cars and trailers as a traditional bolt seal. The seal is fastened using its own lock bolt and lock body. The smart seal is activated when locked to the container. Once activated, the seal can be tracked and monitored wirelessly using the Sigfox global IoT network.

Smart seal alerts include these events:

• Seal activation.

• Seal tamper.

• Wakeup (motion start).

• Sleep (motion end).

• Over-temperature.

• High G (tamper event).

• Low battery.

Smart seal status and events are presented on the Sigfox network cloud service. These messages are made available to the SecurOS system for operations management, which includes monitoring the seal events and tracking, including geo-fencing.
