The debate over whether the ESDA constitution should be amended to admit electronic security equipment distributors that also install, into the association, was concluded at a special meeting held on 13 March 2002 at the Randpark Golf Club. Members voted in favour of the change to the constitution. "This change reflects the changing roles of the players in the local security industry and is in line with international trends," commented Mags Anthony, a director of Panasonic Broadcast and CCTV and an ESDA committee member.
Over the next few months members will be involved in drafting amendments to the constitution which will clearly define membership criteria, and smooth out any loopholes in other areas of the present constitution.
Where the change in constitution will take ESDA:
* ESDA will be able to monitor the quality of all products imported and distributed in the country.
* ESDA will be able to communicate to a sector of the industry that is currently not associated to any body or association.
* ESDA will represent the whole industry (relating to companies that import, manufacture, distribute and install).
* ESDA will be in a position to facilitate discussion forums with organisations as a united body, including all relevant players.
It will be easier to draw up industry standards, as a majority of the industry will be included.
Companies that only do installations or where the majority of their business is installation will still not be considered for ESDA membership.
