ADT Security Guarding Gauteng employee, Gilbert Mthembu, recently won R40 000 and took top honours in Tyco International's 'Race for Gold' Competition, designed to reward service excellence amongst the company's employees. ADT Guarding is a subsidiary of Tyco International.
The competition attracts entries from Tyco employees around the world and aims to recognise the actions of employees who have done something extraordinary in the line of duty. Mthembu was nominated for his actions following a robbery at a South African Breweries site last year. He saw two suspects fleeing the scene of the crime in a stolen vehicle and despite being unarmed and not knowing whether the suspects had firearms, he gave chase. Although the suspects managed to get away, the stolen property was retrieved. He went beyond the call of duty without any thought for his own personal safety.
Mthembu, who has been with ADT Security since 1997 opted for the cash prize instead of an all expenses paid trip to the Winter Olympics in the USA. "I am very proud to have been selected as the winner. I plan to invest the prize money wisely", he stated.
