TAPA: The role of an effective treasury function in business risk management

1 June 2019 News & Events

The South African branch of TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) will be holding its annual conference at Emperor’s Palace, Gauteng on 26 July 2019. The theme of this year’s event is “A Layered Security Approach to Cargo Protection” and will feature a cross-section of speakers who are respected specialists in their particular fields.

In this, the first of our previews for the TAPA 2019 conference presentations, we feature Neil Le Roux, the Founder of Diligent Advisors, an authorised financial service provider founded in 2012 that assists clients to effectively manage their currency and interest rate risk.

“While the conference theme (‘A layered approach to cargo security’) may sound narrow, business continuity is as much a risk to the security of your assets as any,” Le Roux states. “Throughout the TAPA FSR and TSR statements, it deals with risk analyses that need to be performed. Similarly, business risk analyses need to be performed around the prevalent market risks that may affect cash flow security.

“These analyses and the resulting policies and procedures need to be formalised and driven at board level, because similar to other TAPA prescriptions, an effective treasury function does not happen by accident, but is rather a product of meticulous and diligent planning by knowledgeable and experienced personnel.”

Le Roux gained international exposure with Credit Suisse, initially in London and later New York and Singapore. He returned to South Africa in 2009 and joined ABSA Capital in Structured FX Sales, servicing a broad spectrum of clients across industries. During the years specialising in foreign exchange he has developed an in-depth knowledge of identifying and managing market risks. This, combined with his insight into the operational aspects of financial institutions, puts him in a unique position to evaluate the appropriateness of various hedging instruments and internal protocols that are available to mitigate the risks facing local corporations.
