As its contribution to Mandela Day, ZKTeco SA supported the non-profit organisation VulPro, a vulture conservation programme for advancing knowledge, awareness and innovation in the conservation of African vultures. This year ZKTeco decided to give back to this organisation to assist in preventing South Africa’s vulture species from becoming extinct.
Vultures form an important ecological component of our natural environment, cleaning up dead carcasses and decreasing the spread of some diseases. The relationship between vultures and people is also a venerable one. Today, vultures face an unprecedented onslaught from human activities. They cope with electrocutions and collisions with electrical structures, poisonings, land-use changes, a decrease in food availability and exposure to toxicity through veterinary drugs, to list just a few of the challenges they face. VulPro approaches vulture conservation in an integrated, multidisciplinary fashion, with the benefits from the programme accruing to both vultures and society at large.
ZK had the privilege as a company to donate a few things needed by the centre, from Wi-Fi services to enable the centre to be always connected and to live stream the progression of vultures rescued by the centre. The company built a pond for the vultures to have access to clean water, which is situated next to the vulture restaurant where one can view scenes of the vultures feasting. ZK employees cleaned cages, ponds and got nesting materials for the birds. To ensure this project is a sustainable one, ZKTeco adopted seven vultures and an eagle.
