Mayleen Bywater, senior product manager for security solutions at Vox comments on what the commercial business environment needs from security.
Integrated solutions: Businesses are being inundated with security briefs, publications and services. What we need to start positioning is a holistic approach to security, where each service integrates with each other and complements the other. This approach gives the client the peace of mind that they are addressing the various fronts that may be a risk to them
Open standards: Businesses need to invest in the time to set business policies and standards for how they want to protect themselves and their clients, be it physical or cyber. Policies and procedures need to be openly available and consistently trained and communicated.
Advanced surveillance and analytics: Businesses need to have visibility into the analytics of what is happening on their networks, which assists with understanding where policies may have been compromised and where to improve what is in place more pro-actively.
Identity management and verification: Dependent on which environment needs to be secured, organisations will need to evaluate providers in either cyber or physical security. In some cases these can cross over, especially as more technologies converge.
Looking at the cyber environment, businesses need to have the ability to authenticate and understand who is accessing the network and data. Systems being deployed need to be able to meet these expectations or businesses will be left behind.
Intelligent perimeter and intruder solutions: In most cases this is seen as physical solutions, but intruders are branching out to claim more information and personal wealth within a cyber environment. Businesses need to gear themselves to seeing security as stringently on both the physical and cyber fronts.
Remote monitoring: With the application of security services hosted by ISPs, it is important for business who need assistance with the management of their security to have the skills available to them to assist with setting up the rules and guide where possible. They also need these services to assist and manage the environment and proactively notify them of breaches and concerns.
PoPI-ready security systems: By partnering with ISPs that believe in utilising and installing best-of-breed services, clients are on the right track to ensuring they meet PoPI requirements. Hardware, software and managed services are great starting points in ensuring that the client has security front and centre. Clients should be asking their providers about PoPI compliance, it is a mammoth task and can be done in stages with some quick wins.
