Cloud security: are your solutions proactive?

1 April 2017 Infrastructure

When your house alarm goes off in the middle of the night, it’s likely that you have a security response team to react to the potential threat. But, what if there was a security solution that alerted you to potential intruders before they breached your perimeter?

In terms of cloud security, pre-emptive solutions are possible. You can mitigate some attacks by understanding where users are coming from, what device they are using and what they are trying to do before making any critical decisions.

For example, if you have a web application hosted in the cloud and someone tries to access that application from an unknown location, possibly a country where you do not do business, you can have a proactive mechanism in place that won’t allow users from that location in.

Pre-emptive measures such as these require companies to retain a certain level of control over their cloud security. Therefore, while it’s possible to completely entrust your security to a third-party provider, it does depend on your level of comfort around allowing third parties to control access.

Cloud security is evolving and will continue to do so. While in some cases, we can use the same security techniques used in our internal infrastructure, more cloud-specific solutions may be required. As time goes on, and security moves more and more to the forefront of cloud solutions, we are going to see a whole host of new solutions coming out.
