Automated consumer cash handling

March 2017 Asset Management, Security Services & Risk Management

Gunnebo South Africa and Mobi Mall Retail Solutions are making the lives of many Gauteng based commuters that much easier. Mobi Mall Retail Solutions was looking for a supplier which would take the time to understand the unique kiosk solution they were looking to implement under the Mobishop brand.

“We needed a business partner who was prepared to provide a solution that would meet our very specific requirements, but also a partner who was prepared to guide us through the process and bring together the various people needed to make this solution work. We found that partner in Gunnebo,” said Mark Brown, COO for Mobi Mall Retail Solutions.

During the course of 2016, Gunnebo worked closely with Mobi Mall as it set up 22 Mobishop kiosks in and around 14 main Metrorail stations in Gauteng. The main purpose of these kiosks was to facilitate the purchase of monthly and weekly train tickets. Through customised software that links to a number of supplier systems, Mobi Mall also sells mobile phone data, airtime and pre-paid electricity and financial services, to mention a few.

“Our Gauteng-based customers no longer need to spend hours standing in queues to purchase their train tickets and other services. We have located our Mobishop outlets in popular retail environments and shopping malls which allow our customers to buy these services while shopping,” explained Brown.

The Safepay closed cash handling system that was installed in the Mobishop kiosks is a payment solution that combines note and coin recycling units. Customers feed notes or drop coins into the respective units to pay for the tickets or vouchers they require and Safepay then issues the correct change.

In today’s retail environment, theft by staff or staff error; the cost of staff managing complex cash handling processes; the number of counterfeit notes in circulation, and the increasing risk of attack are all criteria that need to be addressed. “Our staff are comfortable operating the Safepay closed cash handling system which addresses the issues of cash differences; the authentication of banknotes; time consuming cash-up procedures and also dissuades criminals. An open and interactive retail environment is achieved and staff are able to focus on customer service and selling,” commented Brown on the efficiency benefits of installing Safepay.

“By taking the time to understand just what Mobi Mall wanted to achieve, and being able to customise our Safepay devices for installation in the Mobishop kiosks, we have ensured operating efficiency for our client. We will continue to review our cash solution offering and advise our client when new technology becomes available because, at the end of the day, we aim to be a long-term business partner of Mobi Mall,” commented Craig Hunter, business development manager, cash handling – Gunnebo Africa.
