Using intelligence intelligently

1 May 2016 Conferences & Events

The security industry is a collector of data, mountains of data when one considers the amount of video footage collected on a daily basis. This data is supplemented by logs of access control as well as alarm and perimeter data (and other forms of data that are freely available).

Unfortunately, the security industry also has a habit of simply storing its data and doing very little with it. One of the challenges facing the industry is to transform its mountains of data into information that can be used to proactively prevent crime rather than simply reacting to it.

Hi-Tech Security Solutions and Rob Anderson will be hosting a full day Residential Estate Security Conference in Durban on 22 June at the Durban Country Club. Jan Botha from Online Intelligence will be presenting at the event, educating attendees on the topic of Intelligence in the Information Age, and specifically intelligence in the world of security.

Within this context, Jan will be looking deeper into what intelligence is, the value thereof, the place of intelligence in business, its role in optimising technology and offer practical examples of intelligence in security and facility management. Special attention will be afforded to the use and value of an electronic occurrence book as a reporting and management tool in security.

By making use of readily available data and a platform with the ability to analyse it intelligently, estates will be able to create a live dashboard to assist and guide their security operations.

The optimal location to collect, collate and analyse information is in the control room, or estate nerve centre. This assumes that the estate has put together a control room that is equipped with the technology required to collect and analyse data, as well as the people able to take advantage of the technology and raise the alarm and assign resources as required.

Ian Downie, a director of Xone Integrated Security will follow Jan with a presentation focused on optimising estate security, including manpower, through efficient control rooms. Ian will provide a holistic overview of the output and general support required from the control room team as they manage the security operations on an estate.

At the same time, he will discuss what goes into an efficient control room and how to obtain a real return on this investment. The control room is where technology, manpower and intelligence are combined to create the estate’s overall security posture and it’s not an area in which one can cut corners.

The full day Residential Estate Security Conference 2016 will be held in Durban on 22 June 2016, at the Durban Country Club from 9.00 am to 3.30 pm. The cost to attend is R1200, which includes lunch, refreshments throughout the day as well as ample networking opportunities.
