Surveillance management for mining

1 June 2015 Mining (Industry)

From small incidents of theft to sophisticated illegal mining syndicates and even the threat of violence during labour unrest. The local mining sector requires a strategic, well implemented and seamlessly integrated risk management plan to overcome some of these and other major threats that could impact on operations.

CathexisVision provides an integrated surveillance solution for the mining sector that meets all security and infrastructure requirements. Says Gus Brecher, managing director of Cathexis Africa and group marketing director of Cathexis Technologies, “While security is certainly a high priority for the mining sector, risk managers still need to work closely with other departments in order to streamline operational costs effectively and increase return on investment.”

Brecher says that forward thinking security management teams in the global mining sector are looking for integrated solutions with powerful analytics that generate actionable information not only for security management, but all operations.

Beyond surveillance

With flexibility and scalability, Cathexis goes beyond surveillance to offer a sophisticated management tool that enables operators and managers to function in a multi-tiered control environment.

Based on the understanding that any one mining site may have multiple CCTV cameras installed, Cathexis offers a black-screen approach to video and event management through the alarm management gateway. This system receives events, which are matched with actions. The software allows for the escalation of events to second and third tiers of management and can also manage several sites form a central command centre.

Features of CathexisVision

Video analytics: CathexisVision offers a range of video analytics to improve the effectiveness of the system. The analytics software provides triggers to the system, which enables it to take user defined action. Effective analytics are proving to be such a powerful business intelligence tool that market trends indicate that this is now becoming one of the leading motivators for surveillance system investment.

Integration: One of the major differentiating features of CathexisVision is the capability to integrate various third-party systems. Integration is enhanced by predetermined actions upon information received from various systems and the association of specific actions for events. Third-party systems include access control, fire panels, alarm panels, X-ray systems and plant management systems.

Interactive graphical interface: The interactive user interface provides a visual representation of one mining site or multiple sites. Operators can navigate through multiple layers of maps to selected sites, drag-and-drop cameras to selected monitors, control outputs, and move PTZ cameras. Users can also navigate multiple sites throughout the enterprise with the map facility.

Health monitoring: The Cathexis solution provides continuous monitoring of all the components, including hardware and software integrity, and provides automated warnings of any possible impending failure. This allows maintenance engineers to perform corrective maintenance before the system fails.

Whether it’s a small mining operation or a multi-billion dollar conglomerate with mining operations throughout the world, CathexisVision has the capability to seamlessly handle the end-to end surveillance solution. It’s the enhanced video analytics and powerful integration with third-party systems that turns a traditional CCTV surveillance system into a comprehensive operational tool that can be used to positively impact all areas of the business.
