Entry-level fingerprint biometric terminal

March 2015 Access Control & Identity Management

ViRDI Distribution SA has announced the release of the FMD10 entry-level fingerprint biometric terminal for standalone, residential and SOHO applications as well as a cost-reducing fingerprint ter-minal when used in conjunction with the MCP-040 door controller.

Identifying the need for a cost-effective yet secure biometric terminal in the residential and SMME space, prompted the development of the FMD10 to address a huge portion of the market that requires high-level security, but also has ease-of-use and ease-of-installation at its core. Not every end-user requires a full-blown biometric terminal that has features they do not have an application for.

The FMD10 is a bareback unit that fits inside a standard 2 x 4 electrical light switch housing and uses a Clipsal faceplate for aesthetics, reducing cost and negating expensive retrofitting. Features, such as meal management, alarming, display for T&A and IP addressing, have been removed. The FMD10 features ViRDI’s standard patented fingerprint module with the ViRDI patented fingerprint authentication algorithm as well as a 13,56 MHz proximity card reader.

Specifications for the FMD10 include: 1000 proximity card users (13,56 MHz only), 1000 fingerprint users (1:N), 10 000 event log, tri-colour LED for visual confirmation, Wiegand output, ViRDI’s Secure RS-485 transmission protocol to be used with the BLC-015 single door controller and doorbell function.

Although the FMD10 was designed with standalone applications in mind, the secure RS-485 transmission protocol allows the terminal to connect to the MCP-040 door controller, paving the way for a cost-effective yet secure SMME application. Fingerprint templates are loaded onto the UNIS Command and Control software and then transferred from the MCP-040 via RS-485 to the FMD10. The FMD10, however, only acts as a fingerprint authentication module and will not have the full functionality of other ViRDI terminals when deployed with the MCP-040.
