Not since the Middle Ages, when the threat of war was a clear and ever-present danger, has there existed such a need for securing one’s place of residence. It’s almost as if things have come full circle and, while our war may not be against rival kingdoms armed with broadswords and catapults, there is certainly a constant war being waged against criminals and whatever tools of their dark trade they may be wielding.
As the tide of crime swells like some malevolent ocean, so the industry concerned with curbing its effects has also grown and today the security sector is certainly one of the healthiest. It’s a classic case of supply and demand. South Africa in particular – with its rather unfortunate reputation as a crime hub – has seen a sharp increase in the number of undertakings dedicated to providing security in one form or another, with its various attendant disciplines such as the installation of access control and automation equipment, CCTV, etc. This has naturally created a demand for training, education and the skills necessary to thrive in what has become an extremely competitive field.
Centurion Systems has a new in-house training facility at its head office in Kya Sands and offers comprehensive product training on the installation and maintenance of its many products, including gate motors, traffic barriers, intercoms and GSM devices.
The Centurion training department, under the leadership of Chris Grobler, a former trade teacher who has been with the company for 10 years, exposes client’s to both the theoretical and practical aspects of its products.
To date, Centurion has provided product training in numerous countries across four continents, including New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, India, Egypt, Mauritius and throughout Africa. To ensure high standards of training, the company has invested in qualified and experienced educators, both holding Bachelor’s degrees in Technology Education, among other qualifications.
According to Grobler, “Every person has their own unique style of learning. Some enjoy reading a manual while others like to watch a DVD or video clip, but a large number of installers prefer the classroom situation, with hands-on experience and face-to-face communication. At Centurion Systems, we aim to satisfy every learning style and need. For this reason, we do offer online documentation and video clips, but we also go to great lengths to visit clients and present onsite training. Our classroom training sessions are of a professional standard – so much so that even qualified teachers comment on the professional approach.”
Attendees who successfully complete the courses (typically through passing a theoretical exam, though the course covering Centurion’s benchmark D-Series operators also requires practical comprehension) are awarded a certificate which will not only help them be recognised as a competent installer of Centurion products, but will also give them the confidence to go out and install the equipment.
“We aim to develop observational, lateral and critical thinking, analysis and communication skills,” says Grobler. “Any person who learns better in a classroom environment, or finds it difficult to understand installation manuals, is welcome.”
