Biometrics speeds up workflow and enhances security

Suprema’s biometric fingerprint scanners play a role in improving both workflow and security in busy radiology practices, according to Ian Robertson, MD of Pro Med Computer Services, SA’s largest supplier of IT solutions to radiologists.

“A busy radiographer has to deal with multiple patients at any one time, performing many different examinations using several modalities from X-rays to mammography, CT scans and more,” he said. “However, security and accuracy of patient information are paramount and cannot be compromised. Fingerprint sign-on, via scanners, is an easy and effective way to track the radiographer allocated to each patient study.”

The fingerprint scanners are attached to all Pro Med’s radiographer consoles. Previously, accessing a patient’s information required a secure name and password. Now, a fingerprint scan assigns the radiographer to the patient, obviating the need to enter the username and password each time the patient’s data has to be accessed and updated during the study process.

“Considering that each radiographer can see up to 20 patients a day in a busy practice, this greatly enhances the efficiency of the practice,” said Robertson.

As in any specialty in South Africa, there is a shortage of qualified radiographers and radiologists, resulting in constant pressure to improve workflow. “In this type of environment, it is essential that they are supported to speed up repeat processes while safeguarding accuracy and security of patient data. The biometric finger scanners play a vital role in this regard,” Robertson concluded.

Suprema’s BioMini range of fingerprint scanners makes use of Suprema’s award-winning algorithms for fast and accurate matching. The new BioMini Slim is certified by the FBI and makes use of advanced hybrid-type Live Finger Detection (LFD) technology, which effectively protects the system against unauthorised attempts with fake fingerprints. The BioMini Slim now also comes with an Android SDK in line with the rapid growth of mobile platforms.

Biometric verification system for SIM card issuance in Pakistan

Suprema recently announced the integration of its latest version of fingerprint PC security scanner, the BioMini Slim into an android-based biometric verification system for SIM card issuance in Pakistan.

BioMini Slim is Suprema’s first model of products to run on an Android OS, which is purpose-designed to provide high-level biometric security for PC-based identity access management solutions. It has a rugged IP65 rated dust and waterproof form factor while maintaining a sleek ergonomic design, and is also equipped with Suprema’s latest 500 dpi slim optical sensor, which boasts a large platen size for easy and reliable fingerprint capturing as well as provides Suprema’s advanced LFD (Live Finger Detection), patent in-progress.

Kwick High-Tech & Solutions, a Pakistan based firm that specialises in SIM manufacturing and biometric security solutions, has already launched this solution for the biometric verification of mobile phone customers, which consists of the android based BioMini Slim with Kwick’s application running on it, to obtain customer fingerprints.

With this biometric verification system in place, before the issuance of a new SIM, the thumb impressions of customers are matched with NADRA (Pakistan’s National biometric citizen’s database) to make sure that the person holding the CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card) is indeed the legitimate individual with correct credentials.
