The Biometric Gatekeeper, developed in South Africa and distributed by CMT Trading, is a PC-controlled access control and time and attendance system. This fingerprint scanner system can accommodate up to 5000 users and is upgradeable to 20 000 users.
It allows one to save a picture of each person on the system, so that when the fingerprint is scanned the control room will be able to see who the person is. For high security areas, Version 2 is well suited, giving the control room an alarm when a fingerprint is scanned, and allows one to compare the picture on the system to the picture from the camera.
A complete log is recorded of every time a person comes in, and the extended door version can be programmed to also keep a log of persons leaving the building, using a scanner to go out instead of the normal pushbutton release.
The digital scanners are U2000, which is a USB (Universal Serial Bus) device. This means that only active USB extension cables can be used to connect the scanner to the controller PC. The nature of USB technology limits the length of a USB extension to 25 m. However, a special converter called USB Ranger can be used to extend the distance between the scanner and PC controller, to 125 m.
"We feel this is a very well-developed product, and the fact that it is locally developed means that it is locally supported, making pricing very competitive and service outstanding," states Anthony Rosenbaum, MD of CMT Trading.
