Adoption of essential gas safety technology in SA has received a boost with the formation of a partnership between gas safety system manufacturer SureGas and black-owned Egoli Empowerment Holdings (EEH) to market SureGas' safety products and meters to commercial gas distributors, public corporations and government.
The initiative is being driven through a joint-venture company, EEH-SureGas in which EEH has an 80% stake and SureGas 20%. SureGas, headquartered in Cape Town, is at the forefront in the implementation of gas safety systems in SA. The company's sophisticated safety solution, developed locally in association with the University of Cape Town, the Cape Technikon and engineering consultants, is able to detect minute gas leaks, automatically shut off the gas supply and raise appropriate alarms.
South Africa, while some way behind the Antipodes, is steadily turning to gas as an affordable, clean burning and eco-friendly energy source. Demand for gas in Gauteng Province alone is expected to top 1,8 billion gigajoules a year by 2021, compared with 32 million today.
In an early coup, the joint-venture has been named preferred supplier of safety equipment by Afrox, which holds some 45% of the SA market for industrial and liquefied petroleum gases and consumables.
EEH CE Shocket Khan comments: "We are tremendously excited about the future of EEH-SureGas, from the perspective of both a commercial venture and a platform for further empowerment."
