Swedish lock company Assa Abloy is to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race - previously the Whitbread Round The World Race - widely recognised as the world's toughest and longest yacht race. The Assa Abloy boat includes South African bowman and rigger Mike Joubert who will take part in the race for the second time under the guidance of skipper Roy Heiner.
Preparations for the Cape Town stopover are underway with Assa Abloy's South African operation, Yale-Union Security, preparing a welcome party when the yacht docks in Cape Town. Yale-Union's Kelly Landro said the event would attract international attention and give Cape Town an opportunity to market itself to millions of foreign tourists.
Yale-Union will host an Assa Abloy race village for the three-week stopover, attracting members of the public to become involved in race events and providing opportunities for the media and public to meet the racing team. Yale-Union will also take advantage of the forum to introduce its association with parent company Assa Abloy to the South African public. The lock group bought Yale-Union Security in August last year.
