First line of defence

March 2014 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection, Products & Solutions

The first line of defence of any property or facility is the extreme perimeter which is normally a fence or wall structure which defines the property boundary. AcoustAlert is a product designed specifically to detect intrusion on the boundary in the most economical and effective manner.

While there are many types of perimeter detection systems on the market they are not always suited to long boundaries and our outdoor environments, they are normally prone to false alarms and expensive to install and maintain.

AcoustAlert, using a microphonic sensor cable fixed to the fence can detect interference on a fence over great distances per detection device. Up to 600 metres of fence line can be monitored and no special arrangements are needed when the fence line changes direction.

While a single processor can protect up to 600 metres of fence line, a number of units connected over a LAN environment can effectively protect fence lines of many kilometres long. Further development on the AcoustAlert detection capability will see the possibility, in 2014, of being able to zone a 300 metre detection cable into multiple electronic zones thereby making it possible to pinpoint the exact position of an intrusion over a single 300 metre detection cable. This concept is still under development however the basic operational principals are already understood and the AcoustAlert hardware and processor has the capability to do position determination through a combination of DSP firmware manipulation and computational analytics in the software.

We see this new electronic zoning functionality within AcoustAlert as a defining advantage which will make it the perimeter detection technology of choice in 2014.

Whether AcoustAlert is fixed onto a fence for perimeter protection or laid underground to detect digging under perimeter fence structures this technology will enhance security responses and will also enable cameras to automatically zoom into electronic zones on the perimeter for quicker and simpler verification of alarm conditions.

AcoustAlert is made in Port Elizabeth.
