The Internet of Things gets real

January 2014 Security Services & Risk Management

2014 will be a year of innovation with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, applications, architectures and platforms that deliver new solutions to transform public safety and keep communities safer. New IoT solutions connecting the unconnected will benefit utilities, manufacturing, transportation, mining and more.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next technology transition where devices will allow us to sense and control the physical world by making objects smarter and connecting them through an intelligent network. IoT and the intelligent connectivity of physical devices is expected to continue to drive significant gains in efficiency, business growth and quality of life.

Key trends in the safety and security industry include new broadband and mobility technologies, mobile wearable video cameras and sensors that are already making an impact in the industry, even the notion of body area networks connecting public safety personnel and citizens. For smart cities, these connected devices and new technologies are already making an impact with new ways to improve and provide safer transit and transportation in cities, improved citizen services with connected parking and connected transportation that use integrated video, telemetry, and location data on buses, in rail that are improving safety and often improving city revenues due to the impact of safer cities and improved city operations.

New IoT enabled technologies and solutions in action

Cisco recently announced new IoT enabled solutions for secure scalable video surveillance, that include the ability to flexibly support millions of connected IP cameras and devices, a new application development platform for IP cameras and enhanced automation technologies for end-to-end medianet management that automates configuration, provisioning, troubleshooting and performance monitoring across network infrastructure and applications. Cisco also announced Cisco Instant Connect, a new application that is changing the way governments and enterprises are able to collaborate and communicate.

Other integrated solutions and mobile applications, such as Reality Mobile’s application, enable real-time collaboration and real-world decision making while meeting enterprise needs for strict security, rigorous manageability and simultaneous information flows in multiple directions. The RealityVision platform is integrated with Cisco’s hyperscale IoT application for video surveillance, Cisco Video Surveillance manager, and allows many different visual sources and allows each organisation to securely share the sources it wants to share with authorised users.
