Have you considered a career in private security?

South Africa has one of the most sophisticated private security industries in the world. It is also one of the biggest employers in the country and offers exciting opportunities for matriculants looking to get into the job market.

“There are many different job opportunities in the private security industry including technical support, call centre, armed guarding, administration, and so on. Many security companies will assist with training to ensure employees meet with the stringent regulations that the industry has to adhere to,” says Clive Humphrey, managing director of ADT Central Region.

He highlights ADT’s Technical Learnership course as one possible avenue for enthusiastic matriculants. “During this course learners are taught practical and academic installation, fault finding and the programming of electronic security systems. Upon completion of the course after two years, each candidate receives a National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 4 qualification and additional credits on Level 5.”

Several learners who have completed the course have climbed the ranks within the company. “Most learners who complete the course start as installation technicians. They can then move onto technical inspectors and finally to senior technical inspectors. They can opt to become qualified assessors, recognised by the ETDP SETA (Education Training Development Practice Sector Education Training Authority),” he says.

Along with the Technical Learnership programme, there are opportunities for learnerships in the contact centre and training in armed response.

“The best way for matriculants or post-grad students to find out what opportunities are out there, is to contact the security company’s human resources department. Make sure you find out what the requirements are in order to apply for the course and have your school or university records on hand. Don’t wait until the new year to start doing your research as many of the programmes start in January. Now is the time to see what your options are and to apply,” concludes Humphrey.
