It’s an astute observation about the dynamic nature of technology; what is efficient today will be replaced by something smaller, faster and more versatile tomorrow. Technology, in its most perfect form, evolves with the needs of the consumer.
And nowhere is this more evident than in the world of security technology. Recent years have seen access control make the move into the realm of the wireless, resulting in security infrastructures that are less resource-heavy both from an installation and maintenance standpoint.
Centurion Systems is exploiting the benefits of wireless technology with its SMARTGUARDair wireless keypad, a multi-disciplinary device that has enjoyed widespread popularity in applications from access control in private residences and businesses, to home automation. A particularly innovative Johannesburg-based installer (pictured) of access control equipment has even used the SMARTGUARDair as a means of addressing the fact that his bakkie was previously sans central locking. Red Handed Security initially devised this idea as a sales tool, but has since found that it is also a very effective theft-deterrent and also saves time since the technicians don’t have to fumble for keys when leaving for a site – they can simply key in their unique access code and they’re on their way.
Using a secure, encrypted RF transmission, the keypad is able to communicate wirelessly with up to 15 Centurion code-hopping receivers that can in turn be connected to everything from conventional security mechanisms such as gate motors, electric locks and alarm systems to slightly more imaginative applications such as pool pumps and air conditioners. The fact that the unit is battery-powered means that it can be mounted in an optimum location – out of reach of criminals – paired with a compatible receiver and put to use protecting properties within a matter of minutes.
Among the SMARTGUARDair’s features is a programmable downcounter, a facility that allows users to manually set how many activations a code should be valid for. This sort of functionality is ideal for granting access to one-time visitors or armed response companies who will typically use their access codes for a single entry and exit, after which their access will be automatically revoked.
