A long process to new cards

August 2013 Access Control & Identity Management

The world’s largest back record conversion provided the groundwork for the new identity smartcards, which were announced recently. The Muvoni Technology Group managed the project from beginning to end, including the complex integration of multiple information systems and software, as well as the digitisation of over 30 million paper-based fingerprint records. They also did so in record time and within budget.

When former president Nelson Mandela and his cabinet approved the Home Affairs National Identification System (HANIS) in 1995, they were developing the infrastructure for the new smartcard technology. Previously, identity verification was a labour intensive and time-consuming process, requiring cross checking and referencing of electronic and paper-based records. Cohesive, seamless capacity was required.

To facilitate workflow, the Muvoni Technology Group developed proprietary demographic back record conversion management software. Together with internationally certified imaging software, they enabled a framework that supported the integration of HANIS and the National Population Register.

The project, which was completed ahead of schedule, employed 420 specially trained operators, working two separate eight-hour shifts, six days a week. Although the Muvoni Technology Group was contractually bound to process a minimum of 64 000 records a day, they managed to do 33% more and averaged 85 628 records on a daily basis.
