Functionality beyond access control

July 2013 Access Control & Identity Management

Centurion’s G-WEB online user interface is designed as an accompaniment to the G-Switch-22 GSM monitoring and switching device. G-WEB is primarily used for the configuration and administration of G-Switch modules – adding and deleting access numbers, editing output times, etc. – but boasts many layers beyond that of mere access control.

When a user assigns a G-Switch module to his or her profile on G-WEB, the system records every transaction performed at the unit (a transaction in this instance meaning that one of the module’s outputs has been activated by a missed call or SMS, for example to open a gate or activate a turnstyle) and uploads detailed logs to the website where it can be perused at the administrator’s leisure.

The logs contain the transaction date and time, the access number used to initiate the transaction, the name and unit number assigned to it and a description of the transaction. Besides the obvious security and surveillance benefits of such comprehensive reports, it provides employers (payroll officers, etc.) with basic, yet effective, time and attendance functionality. Applications for which access data logging can be useful vary from the domestic to the downright corporate; for example, a homeowner can use it to track what time a domestic worker gets to work and leaves for the day, and how many times during the day she leaves the premises. Or, in a more corporate environment, a department manager can employ this feature to tally how many hours his employees have worked in a given week or month, and also to monitor their movements at work.

G-WEB does allow easy assigning of user names to access numbers and logs can be exported as CSV files, enabling administrators to draw up comprehensive reports of access transactions.

The most attractive feature of G-WEB is the fact that registration is completely free and there is no monthly membership fee. The only cost involved is that of the G-Switch modules, which are cost-effective access control solutions.
