South Africa’s economic growth continues to be severely hampered due to copper cable theft, which is estimated to cost the country R5 billion a year. However, the war on cable thieves is being intensified, with the police implementing measures such as increased crime prevention patrols and engagements with key role players through formal structures.
The Institute for International Research is hosting its second annual conference on Copper Cable Theft, which will once again provide a platform for debate and to share ideas and experiences.
Topics that will be covered include:
* Understanding why copper cable theft is so prevalent in South Africa and implementing preventative measures.
* Developing a communication campaign to create public awareness.
* Quantifying the financial and other implications of copper cable theft on mining companies.
* Responsible recycling: initiatives by the recycling industry to combat cable theft.
* The prosecution of cable theft: an analytical overview.
* Examining the impact of cable theft on South Africa’s fixed telecommunications provider.
* The latest developments in combating copper cable theft in the railway industry.
Speakers include senior representatives from the City of Cape Town, Lonmin, Telkom, MTN, PRASA, amongst others.
