The evolution of thermal imaging

November 2012 Surveillance

Once reserved only for specialised military applications at a premium price, Schneider Electric is now making thermal imaging affordable and available to any business or infrastructure.

The company’s Sarix TI is the first in-house thermal camera specifically designed to be an integrated part of any end-to-end video security solution, providing multiple TCP/IP streams and a composite video output simultaneously. “Completely operable with both Pelco by Schneider Electric and third-party video management and recording systems, including ONVIF compliance, Sarix TI is quite simply the evolution of thermal imaging,” says Julian Moss, security product manager and solutions architect at Schneider Electric South Africa.

As easy to install and use as any traditional dome camera, Moss explains that Sarix TI brings advanced thermal imaging capabilities to mainstream video security applications. “The result is an affordable camera system that delivers high-quality video as well as the power and flexibility that only comes with thermal imaging technology,” he says. “Sarix TI’s digital processing capability allows security professionals to maximise their camera investment, while maintaining a quality image around-the-clock and with zero light imaging capability of thermal.”

How it works

Thermal imaging cameras see emitted thermal energy (temperature and emissivity (radiation of heat) variations in a scene). Sarix TI recognises even the slightest change in temperature or emissivity, providing immediate recognition of intruders or threats. The thermal contrast among objects in low-visible-light conditions provides the information necessary to quickly make informed decisions – information that standard visible light cameras cannot deliver. Thanks to its thermal energy technology, Sarix TI is also a powerful tool for applications beyond security – providing the capability to instantly spot leaks, ruptures, or hot spots across bridges, dams, refineries, power plants, and for utilisation in marine applications.

“The beauty of Sarix TI is its ability to apply the power of thermal imaging to any application that presents challenging lighting conditions. Even in total darkness you see potential threats that may not be captured by a standard visible light camera.

“From borders inland or at sea and building perimeters to industrial pipelines, Sarix TI can discover potential safety threats in any lighting condition, maximising the time you have to respond,” says Moss.

The Sarix TI Series offers a broad range of resolutions and lenses to fit your security needs, whether your installation calls for fixed or pan/tilt cameras, which come with IP and analogue capability.
