Demolishing buddy clocking

August 2012 Access Control & Identity Management

Jet Demolition provides demolition services including demolition by controlled explosives, mechanical methods, dismantling, equipment salvage and disposal, asbestos abatement, decontamination of radiological hazards, site cleanup, environmental remediation, earthworks and site rehabilitation.

With teams of skilled employees in various locations within SA, keeping track of time and attendance for payroll and for job costing purposes posed a complex task for the head office based in Johannesburg.

The initial system required the site manager to use a data collection baton to collect daily employee clocking information from Dallas i-button cards presented by employees. The physical batons then had to be sent back to HO on a weekly basis which involved a complex logistical process using company drivers for local sites and couriers for more distant sites. This then opened up further problems with potential loss or damage to the data batons. There were also issues with employees losing their cards as well as delays in getting replacement cards and new cards for temporary staff.

TimeTronics, which originally provided the system six years previously was called in to perform a skilled analysis of the circumstances. It recommended SupreMobile which is sealed to keep out dust, dirt and rain making it ideal in Jet’s business environment, fitted with Suprema’s Biolite Net Outdoor Fingerprint Terminal.

This solution eliminated the logistical issues of transporting the batons to HO, as data is sent on a weekly basis to the HO directly from the site manager’s laptop. The site managers are able to verify the data before it’s submitted and resolve any immediate issues locally. The solution also provides site managers with the flexibility to take on temporary/casual staff, as necessary, and enrol them on the biometric system immediately, obviating the need for waiting for HO to issue a Dallas i-button card. The issue around employees losing their cards is now resolved as the new system uses fingerprints to identify staff, and buddy clocking is now impossible.
