Samsung has unveiled the industry's first home network solution to provide connectivity and control to various home networks that connect appliances and Internet devices.
The Samsung Digital Home Network Solution is a user-friendly interface scheme that uses web-based, Internet standard HTTP protocols for open access. This total solution for the future digital home offers seamless connectivity of wired and wireless home devices without major instalment hassles.
Imagine yourself watching an exciting rugby game on a wide-screen digital TV whilst relaxing in your living room. The doorbell rings, and automatically a video image of your guest, taken by the web-video camera outside the door, appears in the upper right hand corner of the TV screen. Without leaving your seat, you can see who is at the door and click the 'Open' icon on the screen to let the guest enter. This is one of the many exciting digital home networking features enabled by Samsung technology.
Automated home network management
Samsung's Home Network Solution consists of a low-cost home gateway to provide automated home network management and a 'Brouter' (combination bridge and router) to provide connectivity between the application-dependent device clusters such as audio and video devices over IEEE-1394, home appliances over power line communications, PC-like devices over Ethernet or HomePNA (Home Phoneline Network Alliance) and portable devices over Bluetooth technology. Furthermore, the digital home network solution demonstrates seamless connectivity at home with broadband Internet services.
An operational prototype of Samsung's Digital Home Network Solution was shown for the first time at the International Consumer Electronics Show (2001 ICES) in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Under the title 'Samsung Digital Home', it demonstrated a home network system that connected the digital TV, Cable STB and other audio-visual products in the living room.
