CSIR Defence Technology, Defencetek, have selected Guardware fingerprint recognition systems to protect its high security defence electronics programme research and development laboratory.
Two systems will be installed at Defencetek, connected to the same authentication server, creating a company-wide integrated authentication network. Firstly, physical access to highly secured areas will be controlled by AccessGuard, a one-touch physical access control system with a built-in sabotage-detector and a high tolerance of any server or network breakdowns.
Secondly, personal computers and network resources will be protected by SystemsGuard, mounted in a standard extension bay of Defencetek's personal computers. According to Ron Hammon of Elmer Communication Systems, the southern African representative of Guardware Systems, this one-touch logon provides a high level of security without the need to enter usernames or passwords. It is also possible to allocate network resource access rights based on source and destination computer and user.
Guardware fingerprint recognition systems identify a person by comparing the algorithm created from capturing fingerprint minutiae at more than 30 points with the collection of reference codes, or master templates, stored in a database or on a personal smartcard. Hammon comments that the system can also link into the main fingerprint system at the South African Police Services, if so desired.
