The final of the Chubb Schoolboys’ Cricket Challenge at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium went right down to the wire on Friday, 6 October with Hoërskool Dr Malan taking the honours from runners up, Jeppe Boys High.
The Chubb Schoolboys’ Cricket Challenge is an annual event that takes the form of a knockout competition in each of the nine cricketing areas in Gauteng. This is the third consecutive year that the security giant, Chubb Security South Africa, has endorsed the event to the tune of R300 000 each year.
Ten disadvantaged areas participated in the competition this year but only Kagiso's young players made it to the last round. Eight other high schools qualified for the 2006 tournament. They were Parktown Boys High (last year's winners), Hoërskool Fochville, Hoërskool Dr Malan, Glen Vista High, Jeppe Boys High, Trinity College, St David’s and King Edward School (KES).
Stephen Mundy, group managing director of Chubb Security Southern Africa, says the company’s involvement in this year’s tournament proved once again to be rewarding for the organisation.
“This cricket tournament fits in well with our social responsibility programme that is primarily aimed at the country's youth, with a view to helping them resist a life of crime,” he says.
