In early May this year, Ian Claris, England-based international sales manager for Appian Technology visited Vision Catcher in Johannesburg. As the distributors of the Appian ANPR range (automatic number plate recognition) of systems in this country, the company had invited him to share the latest developments on licence plate recognition.
Vision Catcher was so impressed with the latest developments, that it asked Claris to demonstrate this advanced technology to various interested clients. In the three days that he was in South Africa, the Talon number plate recognition system was demonstrated using all our local plates from the nine provinces, including personalised plates, with great success. What was even more fascinating was trying to trick the system. Plates were thrown up in the air and flipped at speed, yet the ANPR still managed to capture the plate clearly.
During the demonstrations facial snapshot recognition was incorporated into the ANPR system so not only was the licence plate captured, but also a snapshot of the driver, enabling the control room or security guard to check the driver against the registered owners list for the vehicle.
See 'ANPR in action' to read more on the technology.
