Today's challenging times have made corporate, government and building security access control more complex. Security precautions have entered a new dimension says Morris Maram, MD of Emergency Reaction Services. "We now have to contend with high crime rates and possible additional risks. Recent statements purported to have emanated from South African born alleged terrorists, caught in Pakistan, intimate there are now potential targets in South Africa. We of course still have the threat from fringe groups on both sides of the spectrum who might not be adverse to going on the offensive from time to time."
Technology has developed tremendously over the last few years. Products that were first perceived in science fiction movies are now available and affordable. Access control systems now range from lock and key entry to cutting edge biometric recognition systems. A multitude of state of the art systems are available that can be combined and customised to suit any company's needs.
Good security starts before the door. Corporate offices, businesses and government buildings, by their very nature, often have high traffic volumes of people who need to visit them. Now comes the dilemma. How do you prevent people with unauthorised weapons from entering the building, without hindering the flow of people you want and need to come into it? How do you protect the building workers and visitors from random or planned violence?
Maram says the modern technology of Ranger's Security Detectors reduces the risk for both staff and clients. The solution is Ranger's multizone technology. The 18 zones scan the different areas of one's body independently, ignoring small harmless objects. "The days of old technology units, that keep alarming for the smallest belt buckle or watch are over," he says. The built in display on the detector even displays the location of contraband items on the person being scanned. Fast traffic flows are possible with the minimum of staff required to monitor the unit.
Ranger Security Detectors are protecting institutions ranging from a group of side by side detectors protecting Andrews Air Force Base to protecting families visiting Disneyland. A sample of other users include Universal Studios, New York State Prisons, United Parcel Service, Dell Computers, IBM, Compaq and Circuit City. In southern Africa, users of Ranger detectors include the Botswana Reserve Bank, the Airports Company, the NIA, the SAPS, DTI, Telkom, Vodacom, Kutama-Sinthumule Maximum Security Prison, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Council, mining houses, refineries and the new building extensions to parliament in Cape Town.
