Panasonic extends iris recognition camera range

Using individual differences in the complex patterns found in the iris of the human eye to authenticate individual identities, iris recognition is the most accurate and stable biometric technique, with a false acceptance ratio as accurate as 1 in 1,2 million. Panasonic last month announced the arrival of the newest addition to its range of Iris Recognition Cameras - the BMET-300A Series.

"The BM-ET300A Series combines high precision, faster identification and flexible system architecture for state-of-the-art personal identification," says Cedric Greeves, senior product manager, Closed Circuit Video Equipment (CCVE) at Panasonic. "The camera provides two cameras to simultaneously capture the images from both eyes. There is also an integrated colour CCVE camera for additional security purposes."

In distributing the cameras, Panasonic has partnered with local company, eyedentity, an appointed distributor in Africa for Iridian Technology software, the US-based firm which holds the patents on the technology. "eyedentity has been involved with iris recognition for some time and understands the technology and its potential within the African market," says Mags Anthony, director, CCVE at Panasonic.

"We see huge growth-potential for the technology throughout the African market, particularly in large-scale identification projects where the speed of the system is unparalleled," says Alasdair Yuill, managing director of eyedentity.

IT group, Faritec Holdings, has already installed the camera in its Secure Operations Centre and it is proving to be extremely successful.
