Buddi Fleet management system goes underground

May 2000 Asset Management

With South Africa having one of the highest rates of vehicle theft in the world, the unique new Buddi-Track Personal Vehicle Tracking and Recovery System is set to revolutionise the vehicle tracking industry.

According to Orbtech Tracking Systems executives at the company's recent launch of Buddi-Track, "Five years of extensive research and development by Orbtech Holdings Limited and its associated companies on the core design and requirements of an interactive vehicle tracking and recovery system paid off when the company made a break-through on the design of the Buddi-Track system during 1999.

"Applying the same technology and operating principles that are used in the design and manufacture of Mobi-Track, the company's sophisticated vehicle and driver management system, and focusing on the needs identified for the passenger vehicle market, the core technology was adapted to develop a state-of-the-art tracking system to satisfy these needs.

"Now, for the first time ever, it is possible to offer this technology in the form of a flexible realtime tracking and recovery system for the passenger and private vehicle market at a price level that is affordable to the private vehicle owner.

"Even though the transponder-based systems currently used in this market are effective and satisfy the basic requirements of stolen vehicle recovery, the process of pinpointing the exact position of the stolen or hijacked vehicle to effect its recovery could be elusive, costly and time-consuming."

Acquiring a vehicle's position within 30 s

"However, using the unique design of the Buddi-Track, integrated with the latest Satellite GPS (Global Positioning System) and GSM cellular technologies, it is now possible to acquire a fix on the vehicle's position within 30 s from time of notification. Once the vehicle has been located, its position, speed and heading, as well as the date and time are displayed on customised mapping software and updated every 3-5 s. Air and ground recovery crews can now be directed to the exact location of the vehicle, eliminating the time and cost implication of extended search operations to recover the stolen vehicle.

"Add to this the ability to automatically notify the Midrand-based operations centre of the fact that a vehicle may be involved in an accident, as well as neat little features such as trip-history storage and retrieval, remote immobilisation, optional panic button, safe area management and optional sensor detection, the Buddi-Track is definitely in a class of its own."

Tracking your own vehicle

Executives went on to say that "the beauty of the Buddi-Track is that it is not a passive system - only to be used in the event of an emergency. By acquiring a software licence from the company at a nominal cost, the end-user also has the ability to interact with the system from a desktop PC at home or in the office. The software gives the client the ability to do live realtime tracking of his or her own or family members' vehicles, allows for the downloading and viewing of trip history and for the activation and de-activation of safe movement areas.

"Back this up with a 24 h control and crisis management centre, it is easy to see why the Buddi-Track is not only a first of its kind - it is in a class of its own and the best all-rounder out there."

In order for Orbtech Tracking Systems (OrbTrac) - Orbtech Holdings's wholly owned subsidiary - to effectively distribute, support, maintain and service the Buddi-Track, a national franchise network is in the process of being established, with franchisees already appointed in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. The franchise network in these areas will be expanded upon and the appointment of franchisees in other areas is actively pursued. OrbTrac estimates that it will have around 80 franchisees appointed by the end of this year.

When asked about VESA approval, Orbtech's Andre van Dyk said that the company was in the process of acquiring the necessary approval. "We would have to supply VESA with a vehicle, fitted with the tracking unit, for 48 hours after which time we will be informed accordingly. We have no option but to obtain VESA approval, so all endeavours will be made to succeed."
